Elizabeth Taylor was an Oscar winning actress, a humanitarian and a purveyor of jewels. Over the course of her 79-year life and 8 marriages Taylor amassed an enormous private collection of nearly 1,000 pieces, some of which she bought herself while others were gifted from her husbands and friends. Christie’s is now set to auction off Taylor’s items from December 3rd to December 17th, with a portion of the proceeds going to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Highlights from the vast collection include a titanium evening bag with diamonds, rubies, and cultured pearls gifted from Michael Jackson; an ivory-and-gold necklace from legendary costume designer Edith Head; and, of course, the famous 33.19 carat Krupp diamond gifted by Richard Burton.
“I feel as though I’m only the custodian of my jewelry,” Taylor once remarked. “When I die and they go off to auction I hope whoever buys them gives them a really good home.”
