Meet Carl, the Oscars Seat Filler

There was a lot to love about Sunday night’s Academy Awards, but one moment that stood out in our minds is when Tom Hanks paid tribute to a man name Carl. Dressed in a powder blue suit with navy piping, a matching bowtie and ruffled shirt, Carl has been a seat filler at the Oscars for 59 years. The first show he did was in 1952, when The Greatest Show on Earth won Best Picture. Seat fillers are necessary at award shows so that when television cameras pane to the audience, there are no empty seats. At this moment in the ceremony, Carl was filling in for Jennifer Lopez, who was backstage waiting to present. Cheers to you, Carl! Sounds like one sweet, sweet gig.
